Taking steps to help pets

RSPCA animal collection officer on a home visit during a Community Animal Action Week

13.10.08

The RSPCA will once again be helping pets and their owners this week as part of its Community Animal Action Week initiative, which has helped thousands of animals over the past three years.

The aim of Community Animal Action Week is to help pet owners by providing free animal care advice, discounted microchipping and neutering vouchers. Local RSPCA officers team up with volunteers to visit as many homes in the selected areas as possible.

The areas chosen are those which are particularly busy for the RSPCA on a day-to-day basis and where residents might appreciate the chance to meet local inspectors and receive assistance or advice about their animals.

Community Animal Action activity in Newark
From today (Monday, 13 October) to Friday, 17 October, the Nottinghamshire team of inspectors and animal collection officers (ACOs) will be visiting houses on the Hawtonville Estate in Newark between 9am and 5pm each day.

They will also be holding a drop-in centre at Christchurch Hall on Boundary Road between 2pm and 8pm on Thursday, 16 October in case anyone is out when they call.

Newark and Sherwood District Council are supporting the event and will be visiting during the week, along with volunteers from the RSPCA Nottinghamshire East Branch.

Last year a success in Nottinghamshire
Last year, inspectors held their Community Animal Action Week in Mansfield and were met with a fantastic response from local residents.

Local RSPCA Inspector Ian Callingham said: "The Community Animal Action Week is a great opportunity for people to receive help with caring for their pets.

"In previous years it has been very well received and we hope to repeat the success we had in Mansfield last year. The sole aim is to provide assistance for anyone who needs it and to prevent animal welfare problems from occurring.

"We don't want to surprise anyone with our visits and are trying to let as many people know in advance so they can take advantage of this unique initiative."
